In the Gospel of John, one aspect of Jesus' divinity is his lordship. Paul C.J. Riley examines Jesus' lordship through the use of one Christological title, kyrios, a word which can be translated as Lord, master, owner or sir. Because kyrios is often used by characters in the narrative, Riley considers it from a narrative perspective. As a result, the first question he examines is how kyrios functions. In addition, due to textual variation for some occurrences of kyrios, the next question addressed is where kyrios is. From a firm narrative and textual foundation, the final question the author asks is what kyrios means. The answers to these three questions provide a comprehensive understanding of Jesus' divine lordship in the Gospel of John.

Within the contemporary renewal of the exegetical and historical research on Jesus and early Christianity, this book stresses the importance of new epistemological and methodological perspectives in exegesis and History of Christianity (from the point of view of Cultural Anthropology and Comparative Religion). 0The articles of the first section present a consequent interpretation of Jesus within Jewish culture of the First century. Jesus activity is located within the Jewish movement of John the Baptizer. His words and political attitude is interpreted in the Jewish context of the Land of Israel under Roman administration. His movement is seen as a sub-group within Jewish society. The section dedicated to the first groups of Jesus? disciples in the Land of Israel and in the ancient Mediterranean world manly focuses on three constellations of questions: (a) the multiplicity and fractionation of Jesus? groups, for example in Jerusalem in the period between 30 an 70 of the First century, (b) the fact that post-Jesus Movement was sociologically characterized by a multiplicity of sub-groups of Jewish groups and movements; (c) the radical modifications provoked by the abandonment of Jewish contexts when the majority of followers was composed by Gentiles with limited relation with the daily practice of Jewish life and religion. Particular attention is dedicated to the connection of contemporary research with the interpretations of Jesus and early Christianity developed in the modern age.

Im Prolog (1,1-4,16) erzählt Matthäus von der Hekunft ([genesis]) Jesu Christi und nimmt dabei bereits wesentliche Merkmale seines Wirkens in den Blick. Unter den Vorgahren Jesu Christi werden in 1,2-16 Tamar, Rahab, Rut und Josef besonders hervorgehoben (1,3.5².16). Diese gelten nach biblischer Überlieferung als barmherzig und gerecht. Im Verborgenen zeigt sich damit bereits hier, dass Jesus Christus ab 4,17 durch seine Zuwendung zu den Kranken, Sündern und Hungernden die göttliche Forderung nach Barmherzigkeit erfüllen wird (9,13; 12,7; 23,23). Sein Handein steht dabei im Kontrast zum Verhalten der drei Könige David, Herodes und Archelaos, die sich als schlechte "Hirten" des Volkes erweisen und darin das Wirken der jüdischen Autoritäten vorwegnehmen. --

Over several decades, scholarship in New Testament and early Christianity has drawn attention both to the ways in which ancient Mediterranean conceptions of embodiment, sexual difference, and desire were fundamentally different from modern ones and also to important lines of genealogical connection between the past and the present. The result is that the study of "gender" and "sexuality" in early Christianity has become an increasingly complex undertaking. This is a complexity produced not only by the intricacies of conflicting historical data, but also by historicizing approaches that query the very terms of analysis whereby we inquire into these questions in the first place.
